My Simple August 15th 2008 (EGM) by TS

Wow, things are really going around or rather heating up. Did not know that there are so many differing opinions and strong views out there. Calvary Today Administrators thank you all for your honest and frank opinions. We view all these siblings debates as just debates, nothing more. In your debates and comments, please do not let your emotions overcome you and turn these debates into a feud. But we believe Calvarites are matured people. We can have differences and yet be united in one body. Unity in diversity, that's what makes life wonderful and exciting.

However, we now want to bring you back to IMPORTANT ISSUES, and one of the main reasons for this blog. How do we move on from here? Here's a little recap on what happened at the recent EGM which we borrowed from "The Spikeee" because it is simple to read. The young writer of this summary is not one of our known TT Members. (Actually there is no register of TT members. We don't even know how many "sympathisers or supporters" we have and it does not matter because there are no different camps. We are all still part of one house, our Father's house called Calvary Church)

Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM)

I'll try to capture the highlights of the EGM with what i deem as interesting details.

By the time we reached, the EGM just began with the introduction of Reverend Dr. (Honorary) Pastor Delmer Guynes, as the guest Chairman-cum-Moderator for proceedings. The EGM was also observed by the General Superintendent of the AOGM, Rev Ong Sek Leang. We were sitting much further behind, hence we could not really see who else was there. Proceedings began with a presentation of 3 points in the agenda by the various deacons and interspersed with professional comments and explanations by the two independent investigators (that were hired by the BOD) , one Lawyer KK Wong and the other , a Forensic Accountant.

Summary (and i agree with the summary):

1) CIM and CARED are not liable to be sued or to sue
2) There is no basis for any forms of suspicions of CBT nor Dishonesty
3) All legal investigations were done via a poring through the documents (as provided). There were NO verbal investigation with the said parties.
4) There are also no irregularities discovered in the accounts and financial statements

But,

5) The Forensic Accountant noted that there was a lack of transparency and accountability and governance in the way the accounts were tabled and handled.

T.B.H.U. (Things Begin to Heat Up)

Announcing the beginning of the Q&A Session. Once again, i'm just going to highlight a number of questions or incidents that i feel are worthy to be remembered and taken note of.

Incident #1

Premise : Datuk KC (very calmly, i have to add) asked for a clarification to see if the Minutes of Meetings (that were provided) were the genuine original copies.

Verdict : KK Wong (Legal Inquirer) admitted that there was no forgery inquiry towards the materials used for his legal investigation.

Incident #2

Premise : A variety of concerned church members inquired as to the thin-line seperating CIM and CC, and why there was a need for two seperate entities to perform the same objectives, and finally on the issue of the initial seed fund as 'donated' by the Missions Department to CIM

Verdict : I don't believe there were any real answers given due to the fact that the deacons kept reusing different ways of coining the same message in a variety of creative manners. Generally, the large amounts of monies transferred into CIM is not justified both spiritually nor morally.

Incident #3

Premise : The concerned church members who wanted to voice out were constantly reminded to ask just 2 questions, although the BOD mentioned that this EGM was a forum for discussion and a voicing out of opinions and questions. I do understand why the Chairman had to halt things, but to the point of turning their microphones off?

Verdict : The BOD disappointed many by saying one thing (agreeing that the EGM was a forum) but followed through with only allowing 2 questions per person. Datuk KC Lim at one point asked the Chairman "Mr. Chairman, wouldn't you want to help keep the word of the BOD by allowing more time to speak?"

Incident #4

Premise : Disillusioned Faithful Elders Issue :

A number of elders (members who have been faithful for many years) spoke out that , although they have been faithful in giving and in serving all these years, they are now disillusioned when they see how the money they faithfully give (to God) has been used (misused?).

Ronnie Lew proceeded by asking why so much of the money was spent of Travelling Expenses

Verdict : Senior Pastor himself responded by saying that ministry requires travelling.
Alas, this was a very feeble explanation, as almost everyone knows that you don't require RM78k a year to travel 4-5 times? That's some expensive ride, bro!

Incident #5

Premise : Were they really malicious allegations? (As alleged by the BOD during the after-service announcement in all the church services)

Issue : A sister explained that they have been fasting and praying for months now, and that she wants to hear directly from the BOD on whether what they have done (prior to the statment by the BOD) are truly Malicious?

Verdict : 'Shockingly', none of the deacons said anything (concrete) , possibly for fear of the repercussions of their allegation, or the misuse of the term 'Malicious'. A younger lawyer then spoke up saying that he read an email (which was later found to be sent only AFTER the statement by the BOD) which was truly Malicious.

Some of the interesting (some questionable) things that happened throughout the EGM was :

1) The vocal support (applauses, cheers, shouts of encouragement) that a large majority of church members gave to the concerned members' questions regarding transparency, accountability, truth, morality and good governance.

2) The vocal "support" that the front portion of the sanctuary gave to a number of those who were asking totally legit questions by telling them to Shaddap! And the most interesting thing that happened in this EGM was ... *drum rolls* The parking lot in Tongkah Building was packed to the brim and so was the sanctuary! It was even fuller than 2nd service (lately)! Wheee!.

Update Conclusion

I feel that it was a very important night for the church, because after yesterday, it seems that a large majority of the church realize what needs to be done, and less people are on the fence today. From the applauses and vocal agreement, we are able to see that there is a much larger group of church goers who agree on the need for transparency, accountability and the likes.

Also, it is worth to note that although the legal and forensic advisors concluded that there was nothing wrong or irregular (now it's slightly different, with the minutes of meetings unverified of its' originality), it does not mean that the moral and ethical issue is resolved.

The issues of the heart cannot be resolved that easily. It needs to be resolved by the leader himself. I'd like to say that i do believe that God was in total control of everything that happened. I believe this because i believe that in anything good or bad, God is ALWAYS in control.

Nothing happens without God allowing it to happen. Yes, i'm saying that all the things said (and not allowed to be said (example, the first lady who went up to give her observations was disallowed from speaking by the Chairman and a large majority of a boo-ing congregation)) and all the things that have happened is brought to the fore because of the prayers of the people for Truth.

All this has happened not because of any ambitions (no, i don't want to take over the church) but because everyone just wants the church to begin thriving in the work of the Lord all over again!

My simple August the 15th is now over!

THE GOOD, THE BAD & THE UGLY…..
Act 1 Scene 1 (DESIGNATED OFFERINGS)

THE GOOD…….
The group of people who responded whole-heartedly & joyously to the request to give when the need was presented, (some sacrificially, forgoing the new dress they having been eyeing for some time or the watch or something which they have been saving for).
They gave, in the belief that it is worth it all, especially when they saw or heard for themselves the untold sufferings & miseries caused by the tsunami.
THE BAD…..
The Board Of Deacons (BOD), who, with one stroke altered the nature of the offerings from 'designated' to 'absolute gift' as defined by the learned lawyer & worst of all sent it to CIM which is personal & exclusive. (You can't question anything, it's personal, they keep reminding you, & when you kept asking, sp would tell you with a straight face, "you are asking a personal question, which we would be MORE THAN GLAD to answer you later" – later you would encounter more hurdles than in the 400 meters hurdles event in the Olympics. (By the way, whether it's coincidence or otherwise, the learned lawyer is twice associated with the missing 'M', the first was in term of a nationality & in this case it's money, or millions to be exact). The BOD's rationale; it's 'good business sense', except that there was nothing good in their decision; nor have they any business in altering the nature of the offerings, (they did not even have the courtesy to request for permission and they hid it from the members' knowledge) and they have no sense of transparency, accountability & good governance. The lame excuse was, they do not need the money, I let you draw your own conclusion whether there was any truth in that statement.

THE UGLY….
The one who merrily went on his jet-setting ways, oblivious to the sufferings of the people whom those offerings were meant for. His seared conscience did not trouble him, the cries of those people reverberating around the globe in tandem with him travelling in 1st./business class.
Moral of the story : nothing is sacred anymore. A designated offering can be turned into an 'absolute gift' based on the decision of the BOD, who do not have to seek permission & do not have to inform you as well. Wonder where the mission offerings that they collect every 1st. Sunday of the month goes????

To be continued....
Act 1 Scene 2 (Smokescreens)

Act 1 Scene 2. - SMOKESCREENS.

According to the Oxford Dictionary, smokescreens are : i). Clouds of smoke made to hide military operations; ii). Explaination, etc. designed to mislead.
These 2 should not have their places in a God-fearing church or is it? Read on……….

The Good.
The members of CC especially the Concerned Calvarite or TT group who questioned the way the finances were being siphoned off ( one BOD said it was a strong word, but let's call a spade, a spade).
They were being made aware that all is not right, with the accounts of the external ministries never seeing the light of day and worse, account of CIM, where the funds were simply out of bounds.

The Bad.
The pastor who lit the 1st. smoke screen and declared all is well with the external ministries.
Haven't you heard of 'Desa Amal Jireh', he asked and went on to describe it's activities.
He knew what the group was asking or after, but he used it as a red herring to divert the attention from all those ministries of CC which had been designated as external, so that they do not have to present the accounts for scrutiny.

The Ugly
The sp, who, when questioned about the designated funds being transferred to CIM, blah out, "To go to India, you need to travel"
Now, to say that was the most profound statement of the century would be a gross understatement of the century.
I believe I was the most stupidest (can't find a better superlative) person in the egm that nite; heard a lot of the youths were laughing when the statement was made (could they be laughing at my stupidity?)
I didn't know to go to India, one needs to travel.
Here, I'm issuing a warning to my ex-geography teachers wherever they are.
Don't ever let me see you again, you never taught me that India was so far away, I always thought it was at my backyard.
Then again, the smokescreen was designed to deceived the gullible or should I say those whose loyalty is so blind to the extend they will swallow any red herrings being thrown to them;
As the sayings goes, there is none so blind as those who won't see.

(p/s : the difference between the bad & the ugly is: the bad covered-up the misdeeds, the ugly covered-up and used the money as well).

Before signing off, here's a song to alleviate the bitter taste in your mouth after reading this article;

"Smokescreens are made of these, who am I to disagree ?
I've travelled the world and the seven seas, everybody's (sp) looking for something (money of course)
Some of them (sp) want to use you (bod), some of them want to be used by you.
Some of them want to abuse you, some of them want to be abused."

(To be sung to the tune of "Sweet Dreams" by Annie Lennox).

Let the righteousness of God prevail and the Truth that sets us free will not only dissipate, but clear whatever smokescreens they have lit, so the church would be set on the right path again.

The Good, The Bad & The Ugly.
After some of the smoke have cleared, blockbusters coming soon to your screens :-

1)The Truth Is Out There (Not at the EGM)(X-Files)
2)Money Not Enough (Money Not Enough I,II & III)
3)For A few Dollars More (Clint Eastwood classic of the same name).
4)SP Asks For More (Oliver Twist).
5)I Know What You Did Last Time (I Know What You Did Last Summer).
6)A Sin Named Desire (A Streetcar Named Desire)
In the meantime, the saga goes on……….......

FACTS of the MATTER
RE:My Simple 15 August 08:
I.Quote: Incident # 4 “Verdict : Senior Pastor
himself responded by saying that ministry
requires travelling.
Alas, this was a very feeble explanation, as almost everyone knows that you don't require RM78k a year to travel 4-5 times? That's some expensive ride, bro!”

II. Quote: Incident # 5 Verdict : “ 'Shockingly', none of the deacons said anything (concrete) , possibly for fear of the repercussions of their allegation, or the misuse of the term 'Malicious'. “

Dear ‘ My Simple’
I. CORRECTION, the amount is RM 200K per annum
given by Missions to CIM for President’s
Travel ( actual term use in the CIM Accounts). The
RM78K merely was what was utilized for that
year. So, it meant the balance RM122K is just kept
in CIM but get moved to its SEED Fund (which has
a RM1 MILLION target to acheive)
The money is considered CIM. Remember, we
were told it is Absolute gift, no question ask
please. But, of course, we still think it is
absolutely ludicrous--it hurts when we know
Members give sacrificially only to discover how it
has been used so lavishly and with such
extravagance.

Has the meaning of ‘Servanthood & Discipleship as lived by Jesus Christ’s examples and teachings been re-defined in this case?

II. MALICIOUS?
For your information, I was deeply disappointed
that the Deaconess who had actually told me
that the word ‘ Malicious’ in the BOD’s Statement
was actually CONFINED to the allegations
concerning SP’s family members, in particular
about his son’s Million Ringgit house, did not
make this clarification a the EGM – instead she
watched in silent, as the young lawyer, ignorant
of the fact stood to defend the BOD, wrongly!

I’m glad because of your comment/ observations, I have the opportunity to make this fact known, and vindicate the falsely accused parties by the BOD in their IRRESPONSIBLE and ambiguous Statement to the congregation.

In fact, the Deaconess had mentioned to me & another brother in early Aug 08 that the reason why "Malicious Allegation" was used in the Statement read by the Deacons on Sun 6th Jul 08 was because SP was not satisfied with the draft statement as prepared by the BOD & SP had told the BOD that there were emails/letters which alleged that SP & family had plundered CC; thus the words "Malicious Allegation" were added. I then asked her whether the BOD had verified SP's statement by sighting the emails/letters or is it just hearsay from SP; sad to say, it's the latter.

So when Lilian enquired at the EGM on Fri 15th Aug 08 about what "Malicious Allegation" was it, I was waiting for anyone of the Deacons to answer BUT, as usual, they just kept quiet (including the Chairman of the BOD) & then, unexpectedly, "the young lawyer" said that there was a malicious email sent out which alleged that none of the BOD & Missions Committee members were aware of the transfers amounting to RM 1.9 million over the 6 years.

I then realised that he was referring to my email of Mon 7th Jul 08 (which was sent out the day after the Statement was read by the BOD on Sun 6th Jul 08); thus, before the EGM ended I had posed the question to "the young lawyer" whether he was party to the drafting of the Statement which he replied "No". To which my reply was "then how would you know what was the Malicious Allegation?" or words to that effect. I guess he felt very bad BUT I then informed the meeting that, be that as it may, "the young lawyer" was wrong to say that the Malicious Allegation was from my email as it was ONLY sent out the day after the Statement was read by the Deacons in CC.

Unfortunately, up to now (53 days after the EGM), none of the Deacons have owned up to identify which email/letter was it that stated that "SP & family plundered CC". The Truth is Still Out There.........

As a Christian, I hereby humbly request that the BOD (including the Chairman) tell us the Truth on this "Malicious Allegation" or otherwise, we may be left to assume that our beloved BOD, in drafting the Statement, had made an allegation based on hearsay without verifying the Truth & this Statement is then read to All & Sundry in God's House at the end of 6 Sunday Worship Services. For the record, there was a Deacon who had felt uncomfortable with the Statement & he had requested that the words "Malicious Allegation" (plus certain other words) be removed or else he would not read it; another Deacon was then asked to read in his place.

May God have mercy on the 6 Deacons for they know NOT what they are doing. Amen!
